The forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s and 80s as the finest boats, best dealers and the biggest waterfront venue combine for the last major boat show of the year.

The Lake of the Ozarks Marine dealers are throwing the 4th Annual September In-Water Clearance Boat Show today through Sunday at The Horny Toad.

The event allows boat enthusiasts to stroll the docks as the best vessels on the market lay waiting for a test drive. Visitors may negotiate with over 30 dealers offering special values on new, pre-owned and demo cruisers, runabouts, performance boats, pontoon boats, ski boats, personal watercraft, docks, lifts and boating accessories.

"If you're considering buying a boat between now and spring you shouldn't miss this. The incentives are as good as they're likely to get," Shane Landis with Village Marina said. "If you're serious about buying a boat, you owe it to yourself to sit down with your boat dealer to find out why this is the time to buy."

Village Marina will dock sizzling Cobalts, Carvers and Four Winns at the Horny Toad this weekend.

Landis says he's already seen some incredible deals roll across his desk and the autumn months are just beginning.

Most dealers have 2008 models to liquidate as the 2009s wait on deck to fill showrooms across Lake of the Ozarks.

Glencove Marine will have the Formula line and six Sea-Doos at the show.

"Buy any new remaining Sea-Doo in stock and get up to $1,000 on a pre-paid Visa gas card. Buy a 2007 or 2008 Sea-Doo sport boat, and receive up to $2,000 on a gas card. This promotion ends on Sunday, Sept. 7," Pam Lepper, Glencove's marketing director, said.

Formula has long been regarded one of the finest pleasure boats for sale at Lake of the Ozarks.  "On the Formula side, we have some great incentives and financing options. Qualified buyers can receive 0% financing for 24 months, or take advantage of huge cash rebates," Lepper said. "We'll have some beautiful new boats at the show, but we also have a great selection of new boats and pre-owned models at our 3MM Marina as well as our Highway Showroom (located next to Central Bank off of Highway 54 in Osage Beach)."

The boat deals don't end there.

Kelly's Port Marina will captain Regal Cruisers, Baja Performance Boats and Princecraft Pontoons from their home at the 19MM to Toad Cove for the thousands of boat enthusiasts expected to congregate this weekend.

"There are good manufacturer specials and dealers are aggressive," Kyle Kelly of Kelly's Port Marina said. "It's the turn of the model year... We have some good deals on new and pre-owned boats."

With boat deals on the table and plenty of weekends left in the fall boating season, Kelly says this is the time to buy.

The most popular boat in America will appear at the boat show, courtesy of MarineMax of Osage Beach and Lake Ozark. Sea Ray, with 54,266 boats, is by far the most popular powerboat owned by BoatUS members from coast to coast.

“Since the average BoatUS member owns 1.8 boats we can say with confidence that BoatUS members own nearly 1.2 million recreational boats,” said BoatUS Magazine publisher Michael Sciulla, noting that 80 percent of members have been boating for more than ten years and that the average size boat owned is larger than 27 feet in length.

“Given their dedication to this lifestyle, it’s no surprise that our boat members have opted for quality and value when choosing their vessels,” Sciulla added.

The 4th Annual September Boat Show opens today at 1 p.m. and will run until the sun begins to set. The show will continue Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. On Friday the event will be free and on Saturday and Sunday, entrance will cost $5 for adults and free for children under 12. Parking is free by land and water.

The town of Grand Lake’s Headwaters Marina numbers were down this year from 12,000 customers in 2007 to 9,000 in 2008, according to marina manager Jerry Hassoldt.

The decrease may correspond with what businesses overall experienced in Grand Lake, he said, as gas prices made their mark on tourist visitation.

The town marina, which offers five paddle boats, five pontoon boats, four run-abouts and a tour boat, raised prices this season by $2 per rental to offset rising gas prices.

A decrease in travelers coupled with 30 days of inclement weather from late June to September, compared to eight bad-weather days last year, compounded the strain on the marina season, Hassoldt said.

The slower season was partially balanced by a shortage of employees. The marina employed five fewer workers from 2007 to 2008.

In hindsight, “We’re fortunate we didn’t staff up as much because of the slower year,” said Grand Lake’s Town Manager Shane Hale. Despite the season’s shortfalls, “we’re tracking to make a profit this year,” he said.

“We’re just not near where we hoped we’d be.” With three more weeks left in the season, expected to be flat for business, official tallies are due out in coming weeks.

It’s the first full season the town has operated the marina on Grand Lake, which before had been leased to outside operators.

Due to a late start last year because of dock reconstruction, that business season was abbreviated yet the marina saw more customers and its enterprise fund netted more profit.

“We’re right in line with most other businesses in town,” Hale said about this year. “I’ve heard from a couple of businesses that they were up, but I think they were the exception.”

The town general fund loaned the marina enterprise fund $200,000 at a 10-year rate to launch the town marina in 2007, “with the idea of keeping payments lower and reachable for off years such as this year,” Hale said. He added the marina aims to pay back the general fund sooner than 10 years.

Improvements such as replacing boats and maintaining docks are planned, but installing a public boat gas pump is not one of them.

According to marina officials, the federal regulations governing installation of equipment for public boat gas were beyond what the town could do.

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said his experience with the Stanley Cup was a personal dream come true."It was fantastic," he told me. "I got a day in Saskatoon, where I grew up, to share it with the kids and the hospital, fire department, police department, that kind of thing, and then had a private party that evening (a barn dance).

"The next day, I took it to my lake home for a family function with my family and my wife's family. That was an excellent time as well."That was also fun for Babcock's children, who had a special breakfast treat on the deck.

"There's nothing like eating Corn Puffs out of the Stanley Cup," his son Taylor boasts on the nhl.com video. "Being a Canadian, the Stanley Cup is something amazing," Babcock said.

"I took it over to my neighbour's place and set it on his table. He said that spot will never be washed. It's a special, special, special thing, and to be able to share it with your friends and family and the people you live around is something I'll never forget."

Babcock will also never forget a special boat ride he took with Stanley to wrap up his time with the Cup.

"Every summer when I'm at the lake, there's a young kid who bagpipes around the lake with his grandfather once a summer or twice a summer," Babcock said. "And I always said that if I won the Cup, I'd get Jeff to bagpipe the Cup around, and that's what we did."

The ceremony started with about 80 family members on five or six pontoon boats going around the lake with the Cup while the youngster played the bagpipes.

"By the time we were done, we had 58 boats following us," Babcock said. "It was unbelievable. It was a beautiful night, the sun was going down . . . it was just spectacular. It's something I'll always remember."

Zukerman says he will never forget the last sip of beer he took from the Cup before returning to Montreal.

"At the end of the night, I ate some chips and I was thirsty," recalled Zukerman, who had already had two or three sips from the Cup earlier in the evening.

"The Cup was there and there was no one near it . . . everyone was sitting around the bonfire. I was standing by the Cup and there was Phil Pritchard (the white-gloved 'keeper of the Cup') and I just leaned over to take another sip and he tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Pearl, you know the rule.' "

Apparently, there is a rule that you can only drink from the Cup if it is poured for you by someone from the winning team.

"So I flagged Babcock down and he came over and tipped it over and I had another sip," Zukerman said. "I'm not even a big beer fan normally, but it tasted great. It tasted special."
